How was the first day?

Did everyone survive their first day teaching ELSA 4/5? There's 9 students in my class and we spent the whole day getting to know one another.

What did you do on your first day?

We started the day in the Tri-Cities Level 4 class with three students, but by the end of the first hour we were up to five. Now that's what I call a real-time intake! :)

We combined our class with the three students in Lynn's Level 5 and tried Audrey's ice breaker activity, which I thought went quite well. During the last hour we conducted our first field trip by walking to a nearby salmon hatchery as we continued to get to know each other.

All-in-all a very good start!

At the end of the first day I introduced the idea of a journal which the students liked. They're starting their journals by responding to a letter from me to them. The question I've never resolved about journals is whether or not to do corrections. I've read that it's better not to; just respond to the content. However the students are never happy with that; they ask for correction. My compromise is to focus on the content by responding to the students ideas but also to correct some of the more important errors. Any suggestions on this?

Hi Everyone,
I'm just coming up for air after a busy, but great, first 2 days. 16 students showed up for my morning L4....only 14 had officially registered. A few of them informed me their future plans included going on to college....however, they don't want to learn grammar....they only wantto talk and listen....hmmmm

Conversely, I only have 2 L5 students for my afternoon class. They are 'serious' students so time flies with them.

The students are keeping journals. I give them a question to answer each day and then ask a few of them to share their answers. As far as journal writing corrections, I have found that most students like to be corrected, not only in their writing but also in their free speaking. But that's just my humble experience.

We're heading out to the Richmond City Hall on Thursday for our first field trip. There is a photography display of the top 200 entries of the 2008 Street Banner Contest. The students can vote for which one they think will win.

That's it for now! Glad to hear others are up and running!
