Has anyone tried journal writing with their students?

A place for ELSA 4/5 instructors to share their experiences teaching ELSA 4/5. Any good teaching ideas? Any good teaching stories? Any good guest speakers? Any bad ones? Any good resources? Post them!

I have tried oral journal writing. I ask the students to record on a tape for 3-4 minutes and then I leave comments at the end. I correct repeated pronunciation mistakes, wrong choice of words, etc. Most of the time, they just want to tell me what's happening in their lives.

One way to start a written journal with a new class is to write a letter to each of the students telling them about yourself - the same letter except for the salutation. The students then answer your letter by writing about themselves. The journal could continue as running correspondence between you and the students. The teachers replies can be quite short.

“Icebreakers and Warmers”
I'd be interested in any good icebreakers and mixers. Here's a good icebreaker for a new class. The teacher gives student detectives clues about him or herself. They work in groups to figure out as much as they can about the teacher and then tell the class what they found out. The teacher confirms or corrects their answers

Thanks for the Journal comments.
Here's an ice breaker:
Each student thinks of 3 questions to ask about the T. Ss pair up and decide on 3 questions from their 6. Groups decide then the whole class has to reach concensus on the 3 most important questions to ask.
Of course, the Teacher then has to answer the three questions.

Writing is a good way to get to know your students. I find that just letting them write is a good thing. I put a topic on the board with the understanding that they can write whatever they want. I read the writing with no comments but I do correct the mistakes I happen to notice. I find their writing improves over the months.
